Perceptions of gender roles and freedom among Iranian international students in Hungary

This qualitative study investigated attitudes toward gender roles and perception of freedom among Iranian students ( n = 20) in Hungary. Four topics were extracted from the abductive content analysis semi-structured interview transcripts: (1) essentialism, (2) gender-role egalitarianism, (3) traditional stereotypes, (4) gendered freedom. Results indicated that: many men adopted although women did not; held transitional attitudes, whereas egalitarian attitudes; generally displayed greater stereotypes sexism as compared to women; almost all students, regardless gender, endorsed equality reported feeling more Hungary than Iran; although, expressed outrage over inequality put emphasis on role differences; some forms seemed be a privilege one other (e.g., no veiling requirement for relaxed cross-gender relationship men).
